Student Activities and Clubs

Students who attend Shawnee High School have a wide variety of extra-curricular organizations, clubs, co-curricular, and athletic activities to which they may become active participants.  Students are expected to obey all school rules and regulations and any specific regulations that may apply to that particular program.

After School Math Help

Help from a math teacher is available Thursdays immediately after school in Room 210. This is a great time to ask questions to prepare for upcoming quizzes.

After School Tutoring with NHS

Struggling with school? National Honor Society is here to help! We offer free tutoring on Wednesdays after school (2:45-3:30) in Room 206. No need to stay the whole time, but be there by 2:50.

Note: Tutoring is also available during study halls! Sign up with any teacher and see Mrs. Stirn (Room 211) if you have questions.

Art Club

The Avatar Literary Magazine is a digital magazine showcasing original student work in various artistic mediums, including but not limited to: informative pieces, poetry, short fiction, visual art, and music.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a school-based program that plays a vital role in our school community. Our High School mentors (Bigs) meet with students in Kindergarten-6th grade (Littles) at Elmwood, Maplewood, and the Middle School. Bigs meet with their Littles once a week to become important role models who are instrumental in helping build confidence and a sense of belonging amongst our younger students. Our mission is to create a supportive environment to foster positive relationships between Bigs and Littles so that each may become the best version of themselves.

Board and Card Game Club

BCGC is a great way to connect with fellow students after school for an hour. A variety of board and card games are brought in for each session and students are free to bring in games of their own to play, as long as they are school appropriate. You can learn new games or play the classics. Playing board and card games is a great way to practice critical thinking and communication skills! They meet Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 3:45pm in the GIC. Cancellations and other information is shared on the club Google Classroom page.

Chief Newspaper

The purpose of the Chief Newspaper is to write, edit, and publish a student- created publication chronicling events and news within the school and our country. The Chief Newspaper staff meets about every month to plan, organize, and assign articles for the next edition of the newspaper. This organization serves the school and community by bringing an exciting medium directly to the hallways of our school, as well as a digital medium that spans outside the walls of our building. Students serve as audience, writers, editors, and printers for a full feeling of both responsibility and pride after each completed edition.

Debate Club

Student Leader: Leen Salem

Debate Club is not just an extracurricular activity, but is a dynamic community where students can grow as leaders, form lifelong connections, and get on a path to self-discovery. Debate Club teaches our students critical skills that they will use for the rest of their academic careers and benefits students interested in learning about new topics and being open-minded. This will enhance people’s research, public speaking, argumentative writing, and acceptance skills.

Esports

Esports is a competitive video game scene. We play Overwatch 2, Fortnite, Rocket League, Apex Legends, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Valorant, and Mario Kart. We compete against other schools in the state of Ohio, primarily from the area. If we make the regional tournament, we get to travel to the Cedar Point Sports Center to compete against other top area teams. From there we can even progress to the state competition to compete against the top teams in Ohio. Recently our Rocket League team has made a splash in the Esports scene, winning the 2023 Fall Classic and the 2024 OHSAA Sponsored Season.  Come to Esports to compete, leave with lifelong friends.

National Honor Society

To be considered for membership, a student must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.6 at the start of their junior year. They must earn and maintain a 3.6 cumulative GPA throughout their membership. It will be checked each semester. In addition, candidates must:

Senior year: be enrolled in at least two Advanced classes, AP classes, or their CCP Equivalents

Junior year: be enrolled in at least two Advanced classes, AP classes, or their CCP Equivalents 

Sophomore year: Have taken at least two advanced/AP/CCP equivalent courses

Freshman year: Have taken at least two advanced/AP/CCP equivalent courses 

Participate in service activities    

Scholarship is not the only qualification for National Honor Society membership, nor does it guarantee membership. Students must also exhibit outstanding qualities of character, leadership, and service to their community and school. These qualities are evaluated by each staff member. Candidates who are considered for National Honor Society membership must submit proof of community service and leadership activities by a deadline established by the National Honor Society advisor. 

Activities: Throughout the years, members provide peer tutoring at the high school on Wednesdays after school and during study halls by appointment. They also serve beyond the school walls, with previous outreaches including the West Ohio Food Bank, purchasing gifts for the Angel Tree project, and the Ohio SPCA.

Positive Peer Advocates

Positive Peer Advocates, formerly known as Gatekeepers, is a group led by staff from Allen County PASS providing an opportunity for students to engage in and plan activities related to mental health awareness and suicide prevention. A few examples of activities planned last year include giving away hot chocolate with positive messages and giving mints at exams. Various officer roles are available in this group. All are welcome to join at any time. Meetings are generally held the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7 am in Room 160.

Quiz Bowl

The purpose of the Shawnee Academic Challenge Team, also referred to as Quiz Bowl, is to provide opportunities for students who attend Shawnee High School to engage in academic related activities and games. Participants engage in a fast paced highly competitive academic atmosphere in diverse topics including sports, media, science, math, literature, music, social studies, painting, architecture, etc.

Shawnee competes throughout the school year in a variety of competitions and programs. Students currently compete in the Black Swamp league composed primarily of WBL schools and others in the Allen County area organized by the Allen County Educational Service Center. In addition, the Ohio State University-Lima has annually hosted a WBL championship in recent years, and last year we placed 2nd in the WBGU Brain Games.

Red Cross Club

Student Leader: Ava Patel

Red Cross Club is a group that provides students with opportunities to make a difference by addressing our community’s greatest needs and developing leadership skills. Working with the Red Cross is an excellent way to make a meaningful difference in other people's lives, all while maximizing your talents, learning new skills, improving your resume, and meeting new people. Activities include Vaccinate a Village, Care Bags, Blood Drive, and MapSwipe to name a few.  Meetings are after school once per month.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events where students show off their science knowledge and engineering skills. Test events cover a wide range of science topics including Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry Lab, Geologic Mapping, and Experimental Design. Build events allow students to design and construct a device to perform a specific challenge, such as launching an object towards a target with the highest accuracy. The Science Olympiad team practices once per week and competes in invitationals/tournaments once per month.

Shawnee's The Tribe Book Club

Once a month, our club comes together to vote on our monthly book read, as well as talk about each selected book when in person. We are always looking for good book recommendations, so feel free to give us a try!

Spanish Club

Spanish Club provides enrichment opportunities to promote and further the study of Hispanic language and culture at Shawnee in a fun social environment.

Student Government

The purpose of Shawnee High School Student Government is to promote harmonious relations throughout the school, to improve faculty- student relationships, to provide a forum for student expression, to organize the student body, student organizations, and student affairs, and to promote the general welfare of Shawnee High School and the Shawnee Community.

TEAMS Competition Group

To compete in the annual TEAMS competition, testing students in an engineering problem with a build design. Our goal is to have 4 teams of 4, representing all grade levels.

We take part in an Essay on a given theme, and then complete a one day competition with a given Design & Build challenge. We start with meetings in early November, and typically compete in late Feb./early Mar.
