Shawnee Band

Course Description

This course is open to students who have demonstrated their ability to perform on a band instrument to a standard acceptable for high school band literature (determined by directors).  Band is a yearlong course divided into marching season (first 10 weeks of school) followed by concert season (remainder of year).  Band is a class designed to teach team work, self-discipline, and develop higher level thinking skills necessary to express one’s self thru music.  Band provides instruction in technical musicianship, ensemble training and interpretive skills. Band members will work on musical skills that will develop creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication.  This course meets every day for the entire school day.  In the fall the organization will perform as the Marching Band and will perform at all varsity football games as well as a selected Band Festival.  Freshmen students will be excused from P.E. class to attend a study hall during the marching season.  At the conclusion of the marching season the band will be divided into two separate concert organizations based on auditions.  Both concert bands meet during the school day, and will perform three concerts plus attend two OMEA adjudicated events as a full group.  Opportunities to perform in smaller chamber ensembles and/or solos at OMEA adjudicated events will be offered each winter (not-mandatory).  Attendance at rehearsals, football games, concerts and adjudicated events is a required.
